What are the largest jackpots won with the Primitiva?
Fans of the lottery who want to test their odds with the Spanish national lottery can take away impressive jackpots that can reach millions of euros.
In August 2016, one of the largest jackpots offered by Spain’s most popular lottery was taken away by a foreign worker from Bulgaria from Quintanar del Rey, Goshka Gueorguieva.
This historic jackpot amounted to almost 68 million euros. After tax deductions, the prize taken home added up to around 55 million euros.
The lucky winner, aged 61, came from a country where the minimum salary hardly exceeds 150 euros.
So, if “Mama Goshka”, as she was dubbed by the media, found her light at the end of the tunnel, why can’t you?
History of the Primitiva
The Primitiva lottery is a game of chance regulated by Spain’s lottery and gaming association (LAE) and involves picking 6 different numbers between 1 and 49, the point being to find the winning combination of the corresponding draw. It includes 7 balls, of which 6 are drawn from a barrel with 49 numbers (type commonly known as 6/49) and 1 is pulled from another barrel with 10 balls (with numbers ranging from 0 to 9) and correspond to the reintegro (the latter, which appears on all tickets, is picked at random). One additional ball is also drawn as an extra number.
The Loteria Primitiva was created during the reign of Carlos III and was based on a suggestion made by the Marquis de Esquilache as to how to increase the amount of money in the state coffers without instituting a new tax. On December 10, 1763, the first draw took place; the system was very similar to the one used today. For the draw, they raised 187,500 reals, of which 75% went towards the prize and the rest went to the state. At that time, the lottery was simply called “Loteria por Números.” It wasn’t until 1812 that it was called La Loteria Primitiva.
Abolished in 1862, it wasn’t until one century later, in 1985, that the Loteria Primitiva was reintroduced by the royal decree of 1360/1985 on August 1 and published in the Official Journal on August 7. In the beginning, the draw took place once a week, at first only on Thursdays; then, as of May 1990, a Saturday draw was added.
In June 1991, in the hopes of creating loyal players, the Spanish national lottery created the “reintegro”, a number from 1 to 10 that offers players the chance of having the cost of their ticket reimbursed.
